Dear readers,

My apologizes, this blog has been in silent mode for a long time…not because nothing happens in Food For Your Eyes Land. Here is a round up page of past projects. Although, it’s true that for a while Twitter (@foodforyoureyes) caught me for its micro blogging attraction and immediate reactivity. This time is fadding a bit on my opinion, maybe because too much people are talking about the same (photographic) things so no one seems to listen to each other.

At a point I thought to transform this blog. But to what? to another tumblr on photography? Finally I took the decision to create www.foodforyoureyes.com, as I own the .com for many years. This is your new destination for everything related to FOOD FOR YOUR EYES .

As an independent curator my focus is on contemporary photography from all corners of the globe with a special interest in photobook makers . Check out the recent project I have been doing for Nofound Photo Fair in Paris November 2012 : Photographers & Book Makers show

However, foodforyoureyes @tumblr will stay mainly as an archives (it exists since 2007!), and news blog. Who knows, maybe I would have a delicious idea to feed the tumblr machine and keep blogging again! Stay tuned

Thank you for visiting, following and reading

Greetings from Paris

The Rhubarb team -Rhonda Wilson, Lorna-Mary Webb, Sebah Chaudry, to name the ladies who organized the successful International Review for 10 years in Birmingham- are rethinking of different ways of bringing photographers an event that will benefit them considering the shifting terrain of the contemporary image world.

“Andy and the Sunday Times” photograph Nat Finkelstein 1965 (ektachrome)

In honor of Andy Warhol birthday today (he was born 6th august 1928), let me pay a tribute to Nat Finkelstein (1933-2009) who photographed Warhol and the scene that surrounded his studio, the Silver Factory, between 1964 and 1967. Nat Finkelstein, nicknamed “Nat the Hat” was a photojournalist and an activist, documenting the counter-culture and the Civil Rights movement in the early sixties. When he came to the Factory at the end of 1964 with an assignement from Black Star Agency to do a major fearure on the New York Art underground scene, then Warhol asked him to stay to document the Factory life. As an insider, he recorded in black and white and in color, numerous iconic moments which are now part of the tremendous history of the Pop culture during the sixties.

All Nat Finkelstein photographs of Warhol reproduced in this post are excerpted of one solo exhibition I had curated in Paris in 2005, ‘ A Tale of One City’ at Gordon Pym & fils Gallery. At this time, I was also assisting Nat Finkelstein, with the wish to shed new lights onto his archives, listening to the stories of his life and sarcastic opinions and avidly looking at contact sheets after contact sheets with the sensation to be a witness of precious moments of photography, art, history and rock and roll…

“My name is Nat Finkelstein, I am a photographer, and during the period of 1964 to the end of 1966 while I was documenting the very social changes which were going on in America, I spent some time at the Silver Factory documenting Andy Warhol and his piece of the New York underground.” From ‘The Nat Finkelstein Interview’ A must read ! - This interview was conduced by Patrick Nagle for the TV series ‘Andy Warhol’s Factory People’. The interview took place at the gallery during the exhibtion “A Tale of One City”.

Great photographers are exhibited: Jacob Holdt, Michael Ackermann, Lars Turnbjork, Christopher Anderson, Pieter Ten Hoopen and… Juliana Beasley.

New York based photographer and fellow contributor to Food For Your Eyes, Juliana Beasley has been invited last summer by ImageSingulières and Cètavoir for a one-month residency in Sète to draw a personal portrait of the town and the inhabitants.

Juliana Beasley’s personnal approach and interest in human beings that prevailed in her bodies of work, from Lapdancer to Last Stop Rockaway Park, is a welcoming and audacious photographic choice made by Gilles Favier, the festival artistic director. ( And yes, as a “facilitator”, I assume to be responsible for having Juliana been chosen to walk into the footsteps of the past resident in Sète, the swedish photographer Anders Petersen. I am sincerely grateful to Gilles Favier for his trust! )

The experience was challenging and a memorable one for Juliana who landed in the Mediterranean fishing port with no ideas of what she could find here. But at the end, her residency resulted in the book,“Juliana Beasley- Sète #10”,” co-published by Images en manoeuvres editions, with a foreword written by the well-respected curator, writer and founder of Agence Vu’, Christian Caujolle…Certainly a promising sign for Juliana Beasley and her photograhy in France!

The Scavenger Hunt, self published book by Jon Giitelson - spread

Let me first confessed, I am a big fan of Jonathan Gitelson’s work for the brilliant sense of humour and absurdity he finds in mundane stuff, and literally, in the junk as in The Garbage Can Project., to create a singular body of work. In his projects and installations, he uses photography, video, found objects (flyers and cars, like in The Car Project, one of his previous work) and used to self-publishe artist’s books. You can visit Jon Gitelson’s website, then you will have a clue…. I’ve always think it is a good sign when artworks make you smile or laught…just the sign that your synapses and your senses are well-connected. When you look or even think at an artist work and that makes you feel happy, it is a damned good sign. This guy is a pure genius!

I’m very happy to introduce you to Jon Gitelson’s latest project, which is….a self-published artist book : The Scavenger Hunt . To help him raising funds for the production costs, Jon Gitelson launched a page on the funding platform Kickstarter. This is a really smart idea…(Check also a previous FFYE post about the Future of Photobook).

The Scavenger Hunt, self published book by Jon Giitelson - spread

If you are a donator for The Scavenger Hunt, in exchange you will receive a print or a copy of the limited edition book. Feel free to to participate and donate 25$/50$/450$

After the jump, there is the text of the message I have received from Jon (reproduced upon his kind authorization) :

The Scavenger Hunt, self published book by Jon Giitelson - spread

” My project for kickstarter.com consists of publishing five copies of my artist’s book “Scavenger Hunt” for the “Hamburg Fotobuchtage Festival” that will be held in Germany this June. My books will be presented by “Kehrer Verlag”.

I’ve self published books in the past but never as one of a kind art objects. My goal is to create a full edition of 50 books and I have found a great local bindery called “Love Leaf Press” who are going to help me out. Each book is going to cost me roughly $250 to make but they are going to look really really good!

You can view my project page at Kickstarter here

Essentially, I am looking for backers to help me finance this project. Individuals who donate $25 towards the project will receive a signed 8” x 10” page from the book (page of your choice), individuals who donate $50 will receive a signed two page spread from the book (spread of your choice) and if you are feeling insanely generous, individuals who donate $450 will receive a signed one of a kind copy of the book (again, finished edition of 50).
The way that kickstarter works is that in order for me to receive the money and for you to receive your print, I need to meet my minimum goal of $1200 (however there is not a maximum cap) by June 17th.

Future of photography books : food for thought

THe Future of Photobook ? When few days ago, Andy Adams, the indefatigable producer behind the online magazine Flakphoto and Miki Johnson the editor of Livebooks Resolve blog raise the idea of a collaborative projects within the photo blogosphere to create an online and prospective debate over photography books, I did an immediate booking ! The list of bloggers who are replying positively to the Call initiated by Andy and Miki is impressive and their thoughts are quite inspirational.

Actually I couldn’t dream about a better way to make this blog alive again, discussing a topic I’m closely concerned with : photography book.

During the week of Paris Photo , last november, I’ve spent most of the time ( a daily routine) to meet and talk with photographers having a photography book projects or a book freshly published , reviewing dummies, discussing collaboration and ideas with european photobook publishers and even receiving a photo book I’ve purchased online delivered in person by his author. Needless to say, that the entrance of the fair where photobook publishers and book sellers had their booths was animated with a sparkling atmosphere… And last but not least, during the previous weeks, I was collaborating with an american female photographer as we did the editing and sequencing for her forthcoming book, after a work she produced during a residency in South France.

I can not predict what will be the medium in 10 years, but based on observations, trends and that photobooks gained in popularity….we could be confident that Photography Book has a future !

Nowadays, and because of the shift within the photo industry, documentary photographers who are doing long term projects or “slow journalism” are more and more inclined to think about a project in a book form, and less and less about a photo essay published in a magazine…

But let’s face a reality, to meet the right publisher and signing a deal with is not only being at the right place at the right moment or having an awesome photo story, it is also a long way, that could take years before seeing the object printed and distributed.

A publisher has to find a “sale potential”, that’s why one or several exhibtions scheduled could be a driving force….But now, within the photo book publishing community, independant publishers and self-publishing are a part of the “zeitgest”.

Kodoji Press, based in Zurich is one of them. Winfried Heininger, the publisher of Kodoji Press who is also a designer creates each book as an object, with a limited edition print run and selects the paper, the book format, the printing witih care., with a constant search for the right form for the content of the books. Each book he publishes is unique and make them object of desire . I’m looking for the upcoming “Dark Rooms” inspired by children books printed on a thick paper or Esther Levine’s book which previously existed as a self published artist book in a limited edition of 5 only (sold out).

As a result of both the difficulty to get a book published and a self-entrepeneurial temperament of photographers with a DIY attitude, the option to self-published has been a choice, for the dutch documentary photographer Rob Hornstra or for the british photographer Stephen Gill, …..Gill has been running his own publishing company Nobody Books since 2005 in order to supervise first hand the materials, sequencing and production of his books. While Rob Hornstra took the subscription model as a business model since his first book , “Communism and Cowgirls”in 2004 as he was still a student. He has also developed a collaboration with a team of designers. His book 101 Billionaires was sold out just after few months and he has been “forced” to publish a second printing called the “crisis edition”” in 2009.

I would like to see more and more photographers jumping into the band waggon of self-publishing, looking for exploring innovative and alternative way to fund their projects, getting inspiration by the funding platform KickStarter…..

The Printing On Demand service like Blurb is another option, enhanced with the PhotographyBook-Now competition. Printing quality and lack of creativity are the main critics we could hear. Distribution and price are maybe the main problems….

Recently, I’ve discovered, ABC Artists’ Books Cooperative an online network for Print-On-Demand Artists books. This platform seems to answer the problem of distribution for self-published books produced via the P-O-D technoiogies, we can imagine with ease, a similar network for self-published photography books only…

It’s interesting to see also the way some photographers use a service like Blurb .:

Robin Maddock couldn’t wait to find a publisher for his book ” Our Kids Are Going To Hell” and so he did a “Blurb Book”, as a dummy and to make a test. Few months later the book was redesigned and came out with the help of a brick-and- mortar publisher.

Olivier Cablat had first published a very limited and expensive version of his hilarious artist book of typology study “Tribute to Panini Sticker Album Champions League”. Few years later he did a new design for a “more democratic” version of his Typology Study with Blurb. The book is also distribute via the online bookseller Schaden as a limited-edition printed on demand

Online self- distribution and word of mouth are the best marketing tools for the small company like Farewell books in Sweden or Morel Books in UK. They are both independant publishers specializing in affordable limited edition photography books, and many more small company like those ones exist… We can hunt their books in specialized art books stores, or buying them online as well. Though they could be on display in some trendy boutiques besides the latest fashion designer products….or in cutting edge indie bookstore in your city…..

During the past 5-10 years , Festivals of Photography around the world and Portfolio Review meeting became a major phenomenon attracting an ever expanding photography community. Photography Books Prize at major event like Rencontres Internationales de le Photo in Arles and PhotoEspana show the dynamism of the photography book production…

And now, a new festival offer is emerging : International Foto Book Festival will take place in Kassel in May 2010 for the third year, while PhotoBook Days 2010 in Hamburg will be opened in June 2010 for the first time,. Both in Germany , this two apparently similar festivals will celebrate the photography book medium, with book presentation and signing, lectures, reviews and photobook dummy prize, and schmoozing….

Proof that the photobook publishing industry is taking the developpement of the photography book seriously for 2010 and beyond !….Promising future ?!

Marco Citron : a photographer with a zest of irony

Marco Citron is a italian photographer with a lot of irony in his eyes.

“The Heroic deers of People Lives in the Centuries”, which he called one time “Boring Landscapes” according to a series well known by a quiete famous british photographer, looks like vintage postcards from the soviet era. But it’s not. He used old films and altered a little bit more the colors digitally. He did the photographs in Ukraine shooting modernist buildings in the suburbs where nothing had really changed from the 60’s or 70’s, even the cars.

This slideshow was produced few months ago for Food For Your Eyes Slideshow presentation in Vienna. Marco suggested me a music who plays so well with his series.

Photojournalist Tomas Van Houtryve infiltered North Korea last year pretending he was a business man who wants to sell chocolate to the most secret country in the world . That could be a Marx Brothers stories, it was also a tour de force. One year later, hearing the terrible news of two american journalists have been sentenced for 12 years of hard labored, he then realized how much it was a risky business. The photographs he managed to take in hospitals, factories, shops, subway in Penyang show what no foreigner could see.

His interviews about his photography inside North Korea were recently broadcast on BBC World Service and NPR . It is worth the listen.

By the end of March, I’ve reeceived an invitation to participate in Asia -Europe Emerging Photographers’ Forum”, a cultural exchange program planned from May 10th through May 19th, 2009 in Kuala Lumpur. Then I’ve realized how much having created Food For Your Eyes Projects could be so grateful. Having such an oppotunity to collaborate with 23 young photographers from Europe and South-East Asia was an awesome experience !

I had also the pleasure to join with a group of coleagues and ressource persons : charismatic Shahidul Alman director of Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography and founder of Drik Agency in Bangladesh, German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski, Hiromi Nakamura curator of Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Martin Fuchs also known as the editor behind Magnum Photo Blog.

Siddharth Jain (Delhi) discussing his work with Peter Bialobrzeski during a portfolio-review session on day 3, at Asia-Europe Emerging Photographers’ Forum, Kuala Lumpur May 2009

Our busy schedule was divided between lectures, portfolio-reviews and discussions for the final exhibtion. We had lot of fun for sure, a lot of talks about photography (of course! ) and then we managed to took up a challenge : an exhibtion ready for a public opening scheduled on May 17th at Annexe Gallery , an alternative art space and gallery in Kuala Lumpur

Editing, printing, mounting, hanging, curating for Emerging Photographers’ Forum Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur :

Editing with Ziyuan Wang from Bejing in a photographer’s room turned into a working place during the first evening. Asia Europe Emerging Photographers’s Forum in Kuala Lumpur, May 2009

Agung Nugroho Widhi(Indonesia) looking for printing done. Day 3 at Asia-Europe Emerging Forum in Kuala Lumpur May 2009.

Evening before the opening , Jörg Brüggemann from Berlin, with Hiromi Nakamura, (Tokyo Metropolitan Photography Museum ) hanging Agung Nugroho Widhi photos for Creative Economies group-show at Annexe Gallery, Kuala Lumpur May 2009,

Thanks to Tammy David and Maika Elan for the photos !

Indeed, before the launch of the official meeting in Kuala Lumpur, photographers have been asked to prepare work related with ” Creative Economies ” the thematic focused for Asia -Europe Emerging Photographers’ Forum 2009 .

How can creative photography impact the perception of shifting economies in the globalised world ? In which ways can social cooperation and creativity meet in the space of indeterminate economic capacity ?…… The result was eclectic and chaotic in the beginning but after a high level of collaborative efforts from the group, then it ended-up with a coherent exhibition featuring 23 projects dealing with sustainable economy, gift economy, ressourceful economy, etc in Asia and Europe.

Now the Forum is over but it has left most of participants with the wish to meet again somewhere on the planet !

Participating photographers for Asia-Europe Emerging Photographers Forum 2009 : Tammy David ( Philippines), Siddharth Jain (India), Anastasia Taylor-Lind (UK), Ivor Prickett (Ireland), Jörg Brüggemann (Germany), Rafaela Persson (Sweden), Fernando Izquierdo (Spain), Agata Marzecova ( Slovakia), Assada Poranamond (Thailand), Erna Dyanty (Malaysia), Ziyuan Wang (China), Vignes Balasingam (Malaysia), Agung Nugroho Widhi (Indonesia), Kerstin Duell (Germany), Zhao Renhui (Singapore), Amit Madheshya (India), Angarag Davaasuren (Mongolia), Alex Wong (Malaysia), Maika Elan (Vietnam), Markel Redondo (Spain), Adam Adamus (Poland), Thy Heang (Cambodia), Ahmet Polat ( Nederlands) .

UPDATE : Finally it was decided to develop further our collaboration with ASEF on the topic of Creative Economies, involving selected photographers to participate, and yours trully as a project coordinator. Second Step of the Asia -European project aims to support participant photographers on their ongoing project documenting “Creative Economies” and to organize a touring exhibtion of the works in Europe and Asia in 2010. More to come, stay tuned….

Festival ImageSingulieres

ImageSingulieres Documentary festival of Photography, is a very promising new comer on the map of Photo Festivals in France. ImageSingulières is held in Sète, a fishing town on the Mediterrannea, thanks to photographer Gilles Favier, founder and artistic director of the Festiva. Photography was on display in galleries and museums around town, and as well as on screen in a old wine storehouse each evening, where local oysters was abundant and so delicious !

Attending the Festival opening week-end on the first days of May, I had a good time with a bunch of photographers : Rena Effendi (Azerbaïdjian), Jens Olof Lasthein (Sweden), Sohrab Hura (India), Kosuke Okahara (Japan) , Ali Taptik (Turkey)….

I was delighted to visit their exhibtions, especially “House of Happiness” by Rena Effendi. ,.
One of my favorite exhibition during ImageSingulieres , “White Sea Black Sea,” a powerful series of panoramic photographs by Jens Olof Lasthein is a visual journey along Europe’s eastern borders. His book White Sea Black Sea (2008 - Dewi Lewis Publishing ) is definitively a must-have !

Update : Congrats to Kosuke and Sorhab who have been selected to participate in Joop Swart Masterclass 2009

In Print : roundup of FFYE's photographers in magazines

Among the numerous feedback, one good news with Food For Your...

Among the numerous feedback, one good news with Food For Your Eyes Slideshow , is when a picture editor inspired by the photograhs, choose a story for his/her publication.
